The goal of the London Finance Field Trip is to visit financial institutions and gather with many distinguished Portuguese NIC’s Alumni working in the City. As international students working towards their Masters and employment opportunities abroad, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet with such prestigious companies all within one week.
We were very successful in arranging meetings with the major financial institutions in London. Our visit to the City included programs with HSBC, Credit Suisse, Barclays Capital, Morgan Stanley, BES UK, Storm Harbour, Citi and McKinsey & Company. We have also visited Queen Mary, University of London.
The first edition of the London Finance Field Trip, organized by the Nova Investment Club (NIC) took place between the 11th and 15th of January, 2010.
The field trip also included informal meetings (drinks and dinners) with Portuguese bankers working in London who invariably received us very well. One of those leading personalities was António Caçorino, Co-Founder and Managing Principal at Storm Harbour, a new investment bank, with whom we had dinner along with his Portuguese team.
We consider the goals of our trip to have been fully accomplished. The trip was a valuable complement to our in-class training, as we witnessed the day-to-day work and social environment of a banker in London. Members of the HR department at some banks provided value by telling us more about their recruitment process, such as what they look for in a candidate and the best way to market our competencies. Some of our programs also included visits to the trading floors and me etings with people from every department to understand their culture, work values and motivation. We also believe that we enhanced our possibilities of being hired in future by leaving CVs at every company we visited.
We hope this initiative will be repeated many times in future as, having been part of it, we are sure of its potential and see it as a great experience that can truly benefit students at Universidade Nova.
