The 2012’s edition of the London Field Trip took place in the first week of October 2012, from the 1st to the 6th. The main purpose of this trip was to get a first-hand contact with several financial institutions and to have a unique networking opportunity with many professionals currently working in London, Europe’s financial capital.
During our week in London, we successfully arranged meetings with major players in the financial landscape, such as Morgan Stanley, BlackRock, J.P. Morgan, Citigroup, Espírito Santo Investment Bank, Nomura, HSBC and Bloomberg.
As students passionate about finance, looking to pursue a career in the Financial Services industry, the opportunity to learn more about these companies and gain an insight into the daily life of their professionals was unique. In most of the companies, we were received by NIC and NOVA alumni.
We also had the opportunity to attend an informal event at the Portuguese embassy, where we were received by the Portuguese Ambassador, His Excellency João de Vallera, and Mr. Martim Avillez, a NOVA alumnus. During the event, we met several Portuguese people working and studying in London, many of them part of the large alumni community from NOVA.
We believe the main goals of our trip were fully accomplished. The trip was a valuable complement to our in-class, as we witnessed the day-to-day work and social environment of a banker in London. Members of the different teams and HR departments provided valuable insights into the recruitment process, such as what they look for in a candidate and the best way to market our skills and past experiences. Our meetings also allowed us to better understand the different cultures and values behind each company.
